Description
Ruff Vase
The Ruff Vase is hand-glazed earthenware, decorated with a burel collar, (the pure wool traditionally used for shepherd’s cloaks in the Portuguese mountains) hand-made by skilled Portuguese artisans. It is inspired by the Elizabethan ruffle from the XVI century. The burel (wool) collar should be dry-cleaned. These hand made pieces may vary slightly. Stitching on collars is elasticated so they can be removed for cleaning and for washing the vase.
The Ruff Vase is another addition to the wonderful collection from the small Portuguese artisan ceramics producer Laboratório d’Estórias (meaning Laboratory of Stories). Their motto is to ‘tell a different story of Portugal’ at their experimental space for design. Their designers, inspired by the stories of Portuguese popular culture, aim to reinvent traditional objects – including the Ruff Vase, (based on 17th century neck attire), using them to tell new stories — and to recreate the history of the country.
The Ruff Vase is available in 3 colours – brick red, chrome green & cobalt black- all ruffs natural undyed burel-cream.

This story on the box explains how the ruffle collar started out as a baby’s bib, moved on to a waistcoat and finally became firmly installed as an ornate, starched ruffle around Royal necks.
